"So you are one of us again, huh," Alan Roberts asked. Alan was one of the people that ended up befriending Lisald when he first came aboard. He, Jin'Tok and Veenak had been Vaat's bunkmates prior to him getting promoted. Now that he had been, for all intents and purposes, demoted and no longer a Senior Officer, the friendship between the four had been able to blossom once again. Outside of Spangler, Ravi and Lieutenant Commander Larsen, the three that sat around him chatting were his best friends aboard ship.
Lisald nodded, being particularly interested in his boot and how it contrasted perfectly with the color of the floor covering. "Yeah, seems that way."
Veenak spoke next. "Yeah, but he still has that huge quarters assigned to him. Do you remember how big it was, Jin'Tok," she asked, nudging the Klingon in the ribs lightly with her elbow.
The Klingon grunted his affirmative. "I do. Bigger than all three of ours quarters," he said gruffly.
Vaat knew they were teasing him, and intellectually, he was glad for it, but emotionally, he felt like he had let someone, maybe everyone, maybe nobody but himself, down. "To be honest, I am not sure how long they will let me keep them. I imagine the Captain and Executive Officer will want to put Spangler in there, now that he is the Chief Science Officer."
Alan scoffed. "I doubt that. Lot of logistics goes into moving quarters," he said, an air of sophistication about him, like he knew what he was talking about.
Veenak bristled. "Like you are one to talk, Alan."
"What do you mean?"
"Uh, hello? Have you seen my uniform lately," Veenak asked, pointing at the yellow on her uniform, denoting she was in Operations. "My job literally handles just that. It's my whole job!"
Jin'Tok answered, injecting himself into the conversation for the first time. "And Vaat was Chief of Operations for a while, until he was wounded in glorious battle! He would know better than any of us."
Lisald shook his head. "There was nothing glorious about that battle, Jin. It was a simple lifeform trying to survive in a hostile environment. It was acting on instinct. And I don't know better than anyone in anything, I'm afraid."
Veenak knew Lisald was feeling bad, but attempted some humor. "Which brings us back full circle to what our idiot friend here," she said, jokingly referring to Roberts, "Said. You are one of us again!
The quip at the expense of each and every one of them make Alan laugh. Jin'Tok snorted his approval, and even Vaat found himself smiling huge.
With his friendships with these three mended, the friendship he had with Commander Larsen and Lieutenant Spangler cemented, and the budding relationship between himself and Winters, thing were really looking up. He was sure he would get out of his own way soon enough, and would be back to his normal, happy-go-lucky self in no time.
