Mission:
Enigma Variations
Location: Freighter
Timeline: Present
Maralen had been prowling the freighter. He had moved away from everyone else and searched places where one would not expect to find either people or traps. He had expected a ship like this to have a number of small spaces for hiding contraband, but he was surprised at just how many there were. This started to look less like a freighter to him and more like a smuggler's ship.
So far, he had not found any contraband, though he did smell residual odors that indicated that these spaces had once held such. Perhaps one of the others had beaten him to this. Or perhaps that cargo had been offloaded somewhere before arriving here. Either way, it was not here now, and that made the scent irrelevant. So he moved on.
As he moved through the very dead ship -- dead as in no crew alive, not as in no power because apparently that was being restored -- he was reminded of the planet the Executive had taken him to so long ago. Fortunately, this ship had no living statues, only corpses. He entered what appeared to be a storage area turned living space and searched it thoroughly, but whoever had been using it as such had gone. There was nothing here worth noting, and he moved on.
Eventually, he made his way to the Engineering deck of the freighter to check on his team. He arrived just in time to witness the switching-out of the conduits. Impressive, he thought. I wouldn't have thought to use a transporter that way. The Realm had prized his versatility and adaptiveness, and he respected those traits in his crew as well.
"Good work, Lieutenant," he said to Hartley. "Very adaptive thinking. Is there anything I can do to help you here?" He knew he was no Engineer, but he could follow instructions. And at this point, the freighter had been secured.
END -- Set up for getting him back into the flow
