Allegro for a CMO

1,006 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Stranded
Location: The Bridge
Timeline: Current

BROUGHT FORWARD:

Another medical cocktail was injected. This time, medication to help the blood bind oxygen more effectively, which would improve his oxygenation and optimize his breathing.

Nurse Rath watched the monitors intently, her heart pounding in her chest. The battle to save Temerant and Bast was far from over, but they would fight with every ounce of skill and determination they possessed.

After precious few minutes, the First Officer's vital signs finally stabilized enough for Rath to roll back on her heels and take a deep breath. They weren't out of the woods just yet, but there was hope.

Through the desperate silence, the symbiont now perceived something. Not something induced from the chemicals. The symbiont strained its perception, trying to understand what it was. It was something very faint, barely perceptible.

And suddenly, it understood. It was a single note. More like a hum, really. A dull hum, very low, somewhat off-key. But it was there.

The music of Temerant's mind was not gone after all. And the symbiont rejoiced.

The Bast Symbiont was not the only source of joy inspired by this new development, Ravi was too. The tension and pressure in her whole body and mind had been pulsing at levels that were pushing her limits. She had been so worried about the unthinkable conclusion that Bast should be removed from Temerant's body and she had, with Nurse Rath's remarkably skillful help, had been almost frantic in their speed of diagnosis, conclusions, medical predictions, medicine prescriptions, fast thinking, horrifying successes and failures on a roller-coaster type of struggle to desperately try to battle to hold ground at least, and preferably come up with something miraculous that might work in any kind of improvement.

The hideous possibility, when some of Temerant's organs began to show signs of degradation, that in these worst circumstances, might be all they may have to save at least one of them had raked at her like sharp metaphorical metal claws but somehow, despite almost despairing herself of getting a hold of the situation within Temerant, they finally got a breakthrough and some of the vital readings began to steady off.

He wasn't out of the woods completely but this was the first time the Medics had managed to stabilise him and stop the decline. Ravi sat down on the floor next to the Lt. Commander who was a friend and senior officer whom she both respected and liked, and felt faint although she didn't reveal this outwardly. She just sat, casting her medcorder over him, repeatedly, making 100% sure he wasn't sneaking in any sudden changes in his condition, as she recovered her own composure internally.

Looking across at Rommie, Ravi nodded her approval and said with gratitude: "Well done my friend. Thank you! You've been an incredible assistant to me here today and your contribution and skill have literally been life saving for the XO." she dipped her head and added: "and to me too, I feel! If we had lost him..... if *I* had lost him due to your not being here or excellent enough to make the difference you did, I am sure I could have lost him, if working alone. I would not have been the person I am now, if forced to face a failure like that, so thank you again." she held our her hand and squeezed Rath's.

"Let's get him a bit more comfortable now we have a little time to focus on lesser things." looking around she sought out anything soft to put under his neck and head, like a pillow to puff up the small thickness of jacket that he was currently resting on.

There was very little but rummaging in her ever present med kit Ravi at least began with a thermoprotective cover to try to recreate some kind of environmental assistance to the shocked and struggling system of the patient as he lay there, barely alive, but at least not still trying to die on her. She was determined to do all she could to try to keep him that way now they'd got at least that for a foundation.

Captain Bane, having just finished admonishing Lieutenant Lisald for doing a lackluster job and not reporting back everything he saw below-decks, stepped over to the Doctor, Nurse, and limp form of Commander Bast. He idly thought that maybe he was being a bit too hard on Lisald, but pushed the thought aside for now. He would analyze that information later, when the ship and crew were not in such a perilous situation. He squatted down next to the trio. "How is he doing," Plase asked, softly, not looking at the Doctor or Nurse, but instead to his First Officer.

Ravi, also looking directly at Temerant, sighed equally softly. "I can't make promises but I do think he's turned a corner. He's not trying so determinedly to die on us but he was SO close that we'll have to keep an intense watch on him to make sure he doesn't fluctuate in and out. A lot of his organs were on the verge of failing and that's a difficult thing to recover ground from. Still, at least he DID come back to stable from there. That was a big move forward and if we're very vigilant perhaps he'll give us a little bit more hope soon?" she explained.

The Captain nodded. The prognosis was good, or at least, not grim. He stroked the Trills head a few times, looking at him much as a father would to a sick son. "Hang in there, Mr. Bast. That's an order." He smiled at Bast, then at Ravi. "Please keep me updated. Hopefully you'll be able to move him to Sickbay, if we can get auxiliary lower back online, soon." Bane stood, stretched his knees, then continued his rounds, checking on everything, keeping the morale up.

Ravi made herself more comfortable. She promised herself and Temerant .... and Bast too... that she wasn't going anywhere until he... er they... did.
