Captain Bane walked from his Chief Medical Officer and First Officer to his Chief Helmsman, Lieutenant (junior grade) Tana Marshal. He had been pleased with her performance, and even liked the way she handled Ensign Roberts from time to time, who liked to push the envelope, professionally. He was wise enough to never step over the line, but by the Prophets did he toe that line!
Coming up behind her, he put his hand on the back of her seat. "Sorry it's taken me so long to get here, Lieutenant. How are you feeling?"
Tana gave a small smile as she looked up at the captain. "Well enough, Sir. A bit overwhelming at first but I seem to be easing into it well enough."
Tana glanced at the controls again. She was still getting a feel for how the senior staff worked and didn't want to draw too much attention until it was exactly warranted.
"Thank you for that, but right now, I'm asking about you," he said, with a gentle smile on his face. He was concerned about her and if she had been banged up like he had during the rapid deceleration and being thrown about. "Any pain? Head injury?" He would ask about her station and job soon enough.
Tana shook her head as she gave a small smile. "I'm doing just fine, sir, thank you." She lied. In truth Tana was having a hard time controlling her empathic abilities and felt the emotions of the crew around her. She was stressed and combined with a possible head injury when her head smacked the console, it seemed her lack of control of such abilities manifested in such a way. Regardless, she was determined to maintain her post.
The Captain was not sure he believed her, but with the critical situation they were facing, he was forced to drop it and carry on. "Good. Have you been able to get anything from your console here about the status of our engines? Anything at all?"
Tana shook her head as she bit her lower lip in frustration while tapping controls in growing agitation. "Warp engines are down, the same with impulse. We are pretty much stuck here. I can try to reroute power to navigation to get a better idea of a course, but that maybe premature."
Bane felt helpless, which frustrated him greatly. However, he could not let that show to the crew. They were looking to him now, at least the ones that knew he was still alive, for support, guidance and leadership, and he needed to provide all of those in spades. Still, it was maddening that they were all surrounded by the latest in technological achievement from a conglomeration of more than 150 worlds, and they could do nothing at the moment but hope and pray to whatever deity each member of the crew believed in that something would shake loose, figuratively, and they could get this machine working again. "I feel your frustration, Lieutenant. Lets trust in the process and in the members of the crew belowdecks to get her up and running again. I have the highest faith in Commander Stovek, Lieutenant Ahmad and all of the Engineering and Operations personnel. We will get through this, together," he added. Silently, he hoped both of those officers and the majority of their respective teams were still alive.
