Mission: Stranded
Location: Pakled Salvage Hauler Kogar

ON

"We are strong," the Captain, a man known as Cherbegrod, stated to his people standing around him. "We are fast," he reiterated. "We are smart." It was the three things he needed to tell his crew to remind them all that they were the supreme beings in their whole wide world, and nobody could challenge them on this.

Garipog, second in command of the Pakled salvage hauler Kogar, smiled as his Captain spoke. There was a reason why the Pakled Commercial Authority had selected Cherbegrod as the leader of this vessel...because Cherbegrod was one of the best and brightest of the Pakled race. Among many of the species that Garipog had encountered, Pakleds were considered dumb. Dim-witted. Easily duped. Well, this time the Kogar and her crew would disprove that notion once and for all.

Less than a light-year from their ship's current position, in unclaimed space, sensors had detected a sizable duranium signature. The profile and density suggested that it was a derelict Federation starship. Garipog knew how jealously the Federation guarded its technology, which could mean only one thing - they didn't know about it yet. This was going to be an extremely rare opportunity, and it would disappear if the Kogar did not get there quickly.

Vernabob noticed the First Mate tapping on his screen, something that was not in his habit. Garipog would usually just sit there and stare at the screen all day. If he was tapping it, it could mean two things. The screen was broken, or there was something unusual showing on it, or he was trying to access another subsystem, which he very rarely did.

"The engines are ready to go fast," said Vernabob, anticipating action. "They can go up to eleven," he announced.

Eleven was fast, far better than ten. "Eleven is fast and good. We should go fast now," he ordered. He really liked going fast. But he really liked the idea of having a Federation starship of his own. He would use that to earn himself a far bigger ship, one that was much stronger, much faster, and one that was for Captain's that were very smart. It could even get him a spot on the Board of Leaders. He was a strong leader. He was a smart leader. He deserved this.

Garipog squinted, giving his Captain a mildly disapproving look. He knew what the Captain wanted…a bigger and faster ship, to acquire more salvage and more latinim so he could retire to a beachfront condominium on Pacifica or Risa. Garipog also wanted this for himself; he had been next in line to become Captain of the Kogar, but then Cherbegrod had used money leftover from a botched deal with some Breen privateers to bribe the Salvage Depot manager on Pakled VIII into giving him this vessel. Cherbegrod didn’t know that Garipog knew. But he would know soon enough, because Garipog was smarter.

“Powering up engines,” he said. “Eleven is go, on your command.”

Cherbegrod strolled across the command deck and sat down in his chair, then immediately got up, forgetting he had put his talkie box to tell him what the Commercial Authority wanted him to do in the running of the ship. Picking it up and sitting back down, he placed it between him and the arm of the chair, forgetting about it completely. "Make us go fast," he commanded, his voice dripping with glee, knowing he was about to change all of three of their fortunes on this ship.
