As she finished putting the dinner plates in the replicator, Christina took hold of K'tress, starting to read her a story.
"Momma, when will we see Mommy again?" K'tress asked.
"Soon, baby, soon," Christina soothed, smiling as she kissed her daughter, frowning as the communications console beeped.
"Who's calling at this hour?" she asked, activating the screen, and then smiling softly. "Uncle Plase? You're calling kinda late," Christina said. "Everything okay?"
"Everything is fine. I wanted to let you know that your transfer orders to the U.S.S. Cygnus. You should be getting confirmation of your orders in the next few hours. I had to pull some strings, but I did promise you, your mom and your dad that I would have you aboard my ship someday. It may not be the Sentinel, but she is still an exceptionally fine ship, with an incredible crew. And she was just updated a few months ago. So, pack your things!"
Christina blinked a few times, looking at Bane. She was literally frozen. Was she sleeping? Dreaming? Was this real? "Wait... what... you... but I... they got..." she stammered. "Kin... she..." referring to her wife, who was already on the Cygnus. They had both requested a transfer there. Kin's had been approved, Christina's hadn't, so Christina had been on Earth with their daughter until she could join Kin.
Bane had to laugh. "Yeah, I pulled a few strings and called in a few favors, love. You will be given a Runabout to use to travel from Earth to here. Now listen up, you really do need to be moving right away. The Cygnus is currently at Deep Space 9 undergoing some repairs after our last mission. We are scheduled to depart in three days. Even at the highest warp a Runabout can achieve, it will be a tight squeeze. So, get packing now so you can be here, ok? You will be assigned to the Engineering Department, naturally," he informed her.
Christina nodded. "I... I'll get packing tonight," Christina said, as she already began to plan what she needed to take, and sending a message to her parents for help. She needed to move quickly. "I can do it, won't be a problem. Will I be a senior team lead, or a different role?" she asked, as she replicated boxes and started to pack things there and then.
Since she had moved to a topic that was duty-related, he shifted gears, his voice dropping half a note deeper. "We will discuss that upon your arrival, Ensign. As soon as you arrive, please let approach know you are docking with the ship instead of the station. As soon as the Runabout is secured, I want you to check in with Lieutenant Commander Larsen, the ships Executive Officer. He will be expecting you."
"Understood, sir," Christina said, nodding as she put some of the items into the boxes. "Uncle Plase, how's Kin doing? I've been worried about her," Christina admitted.
Plase sat back in his chair. He thought about telling her a bending of the truth, but ultimately decided to be straight with her. After all, both Kin and Christina deserved nothing less from him. "Kin is, well, struggling to fit in," he said. "She is there physically, and certainly is trying to be a part of the discussions and events that are happening, but she is shy, notoriously shy. Even around me, and she has known me for several years now. I'm sure she just has a lot on her mind, what with you two being separated and all, and your family being separated. She doesn't yet know that I've gotten you assigned here."
Christina felt her heart aching, but an idea occurred to her. "Don't tell her; I want to surprise her when I arrive. I'll send some engineering requests for our new quarters; specifically for the toilet and bed so Kin and K'tress will be comfortable," Christina said. "I just... I've been so worried about her."
"Momma, is mommy okay?" K'tress asked.
"She will be. Your Uncle Plase has made sure we're going to her," Christina said, smiling.
"Thank you, Uncle Plase," K'tress said, smiling happily and waving.
Bane smiled at the little one and waved back. "Hey there Little One! When you get here, if nobody objects," Bane said, thinking of Larsen and regulations, "I'll let you sit in the Captains Chair! What do you think about that?"
"Yes pwease!" K'tress exclaimed happily, jumping up and down. Christina couldn't help but smile at how excited K'tress was. She hadn't been happy since Kin had left for the Cygnus, and now she was smiling and happy again.
"We'll have to cook dinner for you when we get there as well, Uncle Plase. It's been far too long, and I owe you so much for making this happen," Christina said.
"Oh, you don't have to do that, Christina. Just be as good an Engineer as you can be, that'll be enough. Remember, three days. You have a lot of space between where you are and where you need to be with precious little time. I'll see you when you get here," he said, the tone in his voice indicating the conversation was coming to an end.
"Don't worry, we'll be leaving tonight if I can pack quick enough. Just need to get a few supplies packed and sorted, but you know how quickly I can get things done," Christina said, smiling.
Good, good," Bane nodded, understanding. "Then I will see you when you get here. Bane, out."
Christina smiled as the channel closed and kissed K'tress. "You try and sleep sweetheart, momma has to pack and get ready," Christina said.
"Otay Momma," K'tress said, as Christina's parents, and Kin's parents, arrived to help. She knew she had a lot to do, but she was finally going to be back with her wife, and that was worth everything in the universe to her.
