504 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Outbreak
Location: Science Lab One
Timeline: Two days before reaching Antioch III - Alpha Shift

The doors to the Science lab parted with a sigh as Bast stepepd through. It had been some time since he'd had the opportunity to visit such a place, and he had to fight a bit of nostalgia as the sight of the consoles and scientific readouts brought back memories from his past life as Wilem Bast. He forced his eyes away from the consoles, and looked for the ship's Chief Science Officer.

Spangler noticed the yellow-clad Lieutenant enter lab. He was safely out of sight in his office, which gave Albert the time to observe the man for a moment. The Chief Scientist eventually stepped out, "Hi there, Lieutenant..." His eyebrows raised momentarily before continuing, "Can I help you.. with something?"

"Temerant Bast," replied the Trill, extending a hand. "I'm the new Chief Operations Officer."

The Science accepted the handshake, "Ok. Cool." Albert's face remained neutral with a somewhat force smile, taking a moment to realize he should probably introduce himself as well. "Albert Spangler, Chief Science Officer."

"They've really outdone themselves with the Science facilities on these Nebula-class ships, haven't they," said Temerant, looking around at the consoles. "This is a splendid installation. You even have a Class-VII spectrographic depolarizer, I haven't seen one of those outside the Vulcan Science Academy. Has the lab been recently upgraded?"

"The entire department was refit during the most recent overhaul, not to mention incessant corrections since we launched." Albert's eyes met the aforementioned depolarizer with a tired look. "But I have high hopes it will work sometime before I retire."

"I have no doubt that it will," replied Bast, sparing one final longing glance at the Science lab before turning back to Spangler. "As you know, the ship was damaged during the encounter with the Crystalline Entity. There is still one final phase of repairs to carry out, but unfortunately it requires taking the starboard lateral sensor grid offline for approximately two hours, and shutting down all related equipment. I need to coordinate the maintenance between your department and Engineering. What would be the best time to carry out the operation?"

"I'll begin the standdown for my guys now. Honestly they could use a break. Give me a couple hours, and you can have the rest of the work day." Albert shrugged. "If that'll work for you?"

"I think that'll be fine. Engineering already had the staff on standby."

Spangler nodded. "Fair enough." He turned back, addressing his staff in Lab, "You heard the Operations fella. Wrap it up, we're taking a half-day." Albert turned back to his guest, ignoring the looks he was getting, "No problem."

"Thank you, Lieutenant," said Bast. "Let me know as soon as you're done. Like I said, Engineering needs about two hours for the repairs. You should be good to go for Beta shift."

The Chief of Science gave a what passed for him as a polite nod before watching the visitor step away. As the doors closed, Albert turned to his team, "So, who wants a drink?"
