Mission:
Enigma Variations
Location: Bixilfiz
Timeline: Current
The Bridge of the independent freighter Bixilfiz was the perfect representation of the ship itself. A hodgepodge assembly of technologies picked from eclectic sources, most likely stolen from shipyards all over the quadrant. Bast spotted Starfleet consoles, Klingon power relays, Romulan isolytic constriction cables, Orion memory cores, and those chairs definitely had a Cardassian ergonomic design - his lower back could attest to that point.
But somehow the Bix's chief engineer had made it all work together efficiently. If the man hadn't been involved in a criminal conspiracy to smuggle isolinium, Bast would probably have recommended him for a consulting position at the Daystrom Institute.
They were still clueless as to the purpose of the isolinium. Other than its mere presence on the ship, they had thus far been unable to get any information on it. Where it had been manufactured, where it was going, and what it would be used for. The container was lined with beryllium, which interfered with the sensors and prevented them from obtaining a detailed quantum scan of the product. Such a scan would have provided them with additional information that might have indicated the manufacturing process, which would also provide information about its intended use.
Transferring the isolinium to a different container was also not without risk. This problem was something that would need to be addressed by the Cygnus's Engineering and Operations teams. Something that would have been in Bast's court up until a few short months ago, back when he was wearing that gold uniform. As it now stood, he would have to leave it to the new Chief of Operations, the stoic blond Vulcan, to coordinate with Lieutenant Hartley and come up with a plan.
