Check up

804 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Shoreleave and Reassignment
Location: Starbase 375 - Hospital
Timeline: Immediately after arrival at Starbase 375

The next stop of Thalla's rounds took her to Lieutenant Ahmad, a room. The Cygnus's engineer had suffered a severe concussion during the incident, and was still under observation.

She entered Ahmad's room, and slowly increased the light level before approaching her patient.

"Good morning," she said softly. "How are you feeling?"

It was the female's footsteps that alerted T'Lara that someone had entered her room. She wasn't asleep; but was laying still on her back with her eyes closed. Hours had passed and still she had not been able to achieve effective meditation. It was just as well that there was an 'interruption.' When the person spoke, T'Lara opened her eyes and focused on the Andorian physician. "Greetings..." She paused considering the context of the inquiry. "I am recovering. I still am experiencing lapses in my memory that do not appear to be improving...and my headache appears to have subsided."

Thalla nodded. "That's a good sign," she said. "Memory lapses are a common side effect of a concussion. They can take a while to subside, but you'll get there. Any vertigo when you try to stand or walk?"

T'Lara pushed herself up to sitting and looked thoughtful before answering. "I have been experiencing intermittent positional dizziness, but it has been improving. I still feel somewhat...fatigued."

"That's to be expected," replied Thalla, taking a seat next to the bed. "Your body went through a severe trauma, it needs time to heal. There are medications I can give you to counter the symptoms, but the root cause will still be there. The healing process can be draining."

The Vulcan woman nodded at what the physician told her. "Indeed..." T'Lara paused for a moment considering whether to continue, but her desire to be released overrode her patience at the situation. "How much longer do you believe I will be required to remain on medical leave...my ship?" T'Lara winced slightly. She couldn't help it. She was an engineer...the captain may 'steer' the ship, but it was 'hers.'

"The ship is in good hands," said Thalla, motioning for T'Lara to lie down and calm herself. "Commodore Xaeralan is working on the maintenance schedule with the Captain. They'll have the Cygnus back in shape in a few months, which should give you plenty of time to heal. Now I want to keep you here under observation for another 48 hours. Complete rest. Understood?"

T'Lara exhaled through her nose slowly in an attempt to not express the sensation of frustration at the doctor's directive of more rest. She wanted to get back to work, as it were. Rest was not something the Vulcan woman often engaged in, however, neither was insubordination. "As you wish. I will, of course, obey your directive."

"It's for your own good," said Thalla in soothing tones. "I want to make sure you get back on your feet as quickly, and as soundly, as possible. I know it's frustrating, but it just takes a little time."

Unfortunate. There was nothing to be done unless she desired to be a less-than-ideal patient. "Time I appear to have in ample amounts currently, doctor." She begrudgingly leaned back onto the pillow and attempted to relax herself again. It wasn't the news she wanted to hear. As if on cue, her head began to pound again to the thrum of her heart and she closed her eyes to limit the amount of light reaching her retinas in case it was contributing to the return of her headache.

Thalla pulled out her medical tricorder and scanned her patient. Her intracranial blood pressure was slightly elevated, which could very well be the cause of the headaches, and which was also normal following a concussion, as the swelling around the brain needed to go down.

"I'm going to give you something for the headache, along with a mild sedative, to help you get some sleep," she said. She pulled a hypospray from her labcoat, and programmed it for the appropriate medicinal cocktail.

T'Lara made a small huffing sound but said nothing to counter the doctor's directive. She tilted her head slightly to expose her neck so the physician had a better view of her neck for the hypospray. Her headache was starting to ramp up and if she wasn't going to be released currently then it was logical to obtain rest to continue healing. "You have my thanks, doctor."

"Just doing my job," said Thalla, pressing the hypospray to T'Lara's neck. She put the tool back in her pocket. "I'll be back to check on you at the end of my shift."

She turned and headed out the door, dimming the lights on her way out.
