Letter from Doctor Elodin Devan to Captain Bane Plase, Commanding Officer, USS Cygnus
My dear friend,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am sorry that it took me this long to get back to you. Your letter came when I was away in the Dharavan province, helping to coordinate the vaccination efforts there. And before you get too concerned, I did take every precaution. Information about my continued presence on the planet is restricted to a very select few - the Tashi’s cabinet, senior security officials, and the leaders of the Healers’ Guild. Even the Council of Elders is unaware of my presence.
I have been assigned quarters in Tashi Oromani’s mansion. They are quite comfortable, I have access to anything I might require, and the work is ongoing. I think we are making good progress in containing the epidemic. Infection rates are decreasing. Vaccine production is increasing, and I get the impression that the Antiocians are finally beginning to adopt the right safety measures. Still, I don’t anticipate that my duty here will end soon. There is still too much to do.
I am very sorry to hear about the Cygnus and the terrible accident that has occurred. The Prophets have chosen to take you on a difficult journey. I know they will guide you to safer waters. You must open your pagh and accept their guidance.
I am glad to hear that Doctor Raviran has made Sickbay her domain. I know she will perform her duty to the very best of her abilities. The crew is in good hands under her expert guidance.
Tashi Oromani very rarely speaks of you. In fact, I very rarely see her at all. To be honest, I think she avoids me, even though I live on her personal estate. The situation is becoming untenable for her. She has taken a sizeable share of the blame for what has befallen the people of Antioch, even though none of this was her fault. The discontent is rising, and I fear it will soon become unbearable, and she will be forced to resign. If that happens, I don’t know how that will affect me.
I have faith in the Prophets. They will see me through this. And if it is Their will that I should join Them in the Celestial Temple, then I shall accept it with gratitude.
Rest assured, I will do everything I can to keep you advised of the situation.
Walk with the Prophets, my friend.
Elodin Devan
