870 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Shakedown
Location: Caj’s Quarters
Timeline: after part 1/3

When he finally stopped throwing things, Ravi sighed with relief and let the rest that she was balancing fall on the soft surface, relieved that 'fielding' exercise was over. It was then that she looked up to see the one item he had finished with and took in his words slowly.
"Replica.. Bajoran ..Time.. Orb?" she repeated very slowly and stared at it as the glowing increased before her very eyes, just as if it were real. Her breathing became as slow as her words and her eyes widened with disbelief.
"Where in the Universe did you get that?" she breathed with wonder in her expression.
Continued:
“I know right pretty cool. I got it on Earth. Honestly I think it was like a tourist trap shop in San Francisco. Some wiley Ferengi set up shop to flog stuff to the Bajoran pilgrims that boat there now and again. But it looked pretty cool. Anyway it’s yours you can have it.”
"Thank you" she replied, taking the replica and looking closely at it. After a while she put it aside, close to the door in order to take it back with her.
Ravi straightened, rubbing her lower back a little. "So, is this all of it now?" she asked hoping he wouldn't say no as she couldn't imagine how they were going to fit any more in.
“I could massage the crinkle in your back next if you like?” Questioned Caj perhaps a bit too hopefully. “I have it from a reliable source that I am very good with my hands…..” he held them both up for examination.
Ravi tried very hard not to laugh but it wasn't possible. She went across and pretended to examine his hands and she agreed that they had passed. "All present and correct" she grinned, shaking her head, chuckling. "But if we don't do some more unpacking you'll never be able to find me even a chair to sit on, let alone a flat surface to lie on for a massage!"
"Which box first?" she asked, looking at them all with a suspicious eye. "Shall we put things into categories? One pile for things you need to keep because they mean something to you, or you need them. One pile for rubbish that has to be recycled. Then the last for the 'maybes'?"
“Ok can you put yourself in the first pile then?” Said Caj with a cheesy grin. “You know this room has the new holographic environment replication system. I could just create a holographic bed flo……” Caj stopped mid sentence and started looking at the ceiling thoughtfully.
"I was just about to get all warm and fuzzy about your first answer when you spoiled it!" Ravi put on a pouty sulk and started on the nearest box that Caj had already dived into and partially emptied out by looking for the Bajoran Orb. She picked up a couple more objects and held them up. The first two were badly wrapped and had suffered from recent or previous damage so she took them to the far left of the central mountain of boxes and declared the area "Disposal Pile", turning to look to see what Caj was doing now and if he had acknowledged or even heard her declaration and demarcation.
It appeared he hadn't stopped looking up at the ceiling and she wondered it he was back to his earlier "writing equations on the wall" mode already? She sighed and picked the two 'rubbish items' up again, deciding to take them straight to the replicator for deconstruction and recycling. "If we do it in smaller batches we won't risk overloading the machine later." she commented on her reasoning, but under no illusions that the Trill had even heard her.
Caj was looking intensely and thoughtfully at the ceiling. You could almost see the metaphorical cogs turning in his brain. “You know…..the Captain did tell us to test the new ships systems….and I’m sure with another small external power source i could create a sustained holographic environment. Say for another life form…..then I could move it to these quarters…”
"Move it.... Holographic.... Do you mean Kevin?? " Ravi was slowly following Caj's ramblings.
"Would it need a large holographic set up? " She asked, looking around the quarters and appraising how much Caj might be able to give to the installation. "I suppose if you had to give him too much room you could always come and live with m.... " She cut off, suddenly seeing flashes of equations scrawled over the walls of her own Suite on the Medical Deck. She blushed and finally got eye contact from the distracted Trill.
“Woah wait you want me to live with you!” Exclaimed Caj as his own brain finally caught up with what Ravi had said, as he had been mostly focused on his new idea of making his quarters a mini holodeck. “I mean that’s kind of you to offer and I am flattered that you offered but we are definitely not there yet…..”
